This is a really interesting role, working in a National Tax Technical Team. This role wiill involve responsiblity for the tax quality control programme and standards related guidance in relation to tax work (principally the Tax Compliance Manual) for a large accountancy firm.

Critical Responsibilities
Running the tax quality control review programme to cover the entire practice over a two year period, which includes participating in office visits, coordinating the results, drafting reports in conjunction with other reviewers as necessary, presenting the findings when necessary and negotiating reports with individual partners.

Preparing reports on QCR results for the Executive and standards partner and making recommendations for improvements.

Review of potential partners’ work.

Risk management on tax products – specifying risk management procedures, drafting engagement terms.

Recommendations of key tax risk management actions.

Keeping the Tax Compliance Manual updated, including drafting new or revised policy as appropriate. This may include evaluation of the effectiveness of existing policies.

Producing and updating the firm's tax related word templates, including engagement terms.

Standardisation of the firm’s approach, for example in areas such as controls over time limits, or approach to due diligence work.
Liaising with the wider Standards &Risk Management team on standards and risk management issues affecting the tax practice, e.g. internal licensing.
Acting as a helpdesk on standards/ risk management related queries.
Production of training material on standards and risk management issues.
Review of potential disclosures under DoTAS rules and keeping DoTAS guidance updated; quarterly reporting to HMRC.
Keeping up to date on both technical and non-technical issues which affect standards and risk management for the tax practice, including case law developments on areas such as discovery assessments, HMRC powers, Institute guidance changes and HMRC changes in practice and policy (e.g. Condoc on aggressive tax avoidance schemes, potential GAAR) and audit independence issues in respect of tax services to audit clients.
Responding to ad hoc risk management issues such as data security.
Dealing with regulatory interest in the firm's tax practice.
Input on complaints in respect of tax work.
Involvement in assessing potential target firms for acquisition in terms of risk.
Possible involvement in risk management for the firm internationally with new global tax QC and risk management manual.
As time permits, assistance with ‘Tax Flashes’ and website update on technical matters.

Requirements
This is a high profile role which requires a person with experience and authority. The person must be able to take ownership of significant projects and drive them forwards and continue to develop our existing risk management. The person should be proactive in identifying changes that need making to manage our risk. Good communication skills and understanding of sources of risk in a tax practice and key risk management issues are essential. A good working knowledge of tax and flexible approach are also necessary. The person should be a good networker as it will be necessary to work with a wide range of people within the firm.
Person Specification
• ACA and/ or CTA
• Self starter who can take ownership of projects, is committed to delivery and does not require constant supervision
• Commands authority
• Good tax technical and risk management awareness
• As the role will involve contact with senior people in the firm, good interpersonal skills and confidence are essential
• Good written and oral communication skills, preferably with experience of presentations
• Thorough and orderly work style with strong attention to detail
• Flexible, able to operate as part of a team and prepared to ‘pitch in’ to a variety of projects, and prepared to travel
